EA Mobile launches SKATE

InfoSpace’s Tony Hawks seems to get some serious competition from EA Mobile as they unleash their skate stunting mobile game called SKATE.

In SKATE, players can choose to play freestyle or skate their way through the fictional city of San Vanelona on a mission to become a skateboarding superstar by pulling off enough slick moves to capture the cameras and land on the cover of Thrasher magazine. Delivering a mobile game experience that captures the essence and authenticity of the console title, SKATE also features professional skaters such as Danny Way, Chris Cole, Mike Carroll and Rob Dyrdek for players to interact with.

"SKATE delivers all the hallmarks of a quality mobile title with exciting graphics, approachable gameplay and accessible challenges," said Travis Boatman, VP of Worldwide Studios at EA Mobile. "Whether you're a hardcore skater or a casual gamer who has never been on a skateboard before, you'll be able to experience the thrills of extreme skateboard action with simple controls that make it easy and fun for anyone to pull 360s, grinds, kick-flips and more."

EA Mobile: Revenues Flat

eamobile.jpgElectronic Arts released their second quarter 2007 revenues this week, and things were essentially flat from its mobile division. The Q2 numbers were flat at $33, which was the same as the same quarter last year, and down from Q1 of 2007, which had revenue of $36 million. Mobile gaming makes up about eight percent of EA’s total platform revenue.

It wasn’t much better at rival THQ, which reported $4.2 million, compared to $5.5 million a year ago in the same quarter. Still, with new console systems released late last year that may have drawn attention away, and a more crowded arena, it is still a long way from game over for mobile.

EA Mobile increase revenues

The performance of EA's mobile games division was one of the highlights for the company in an otherwise modest end to the financial year.

Results for the company's full year saw it report revenues of USD 3.1 billion (EUR 2.2bn), an increase of 4.7 per cent over the previous year. Income was down to USD 76 million (EU 56m), down from USD 236 million (EUR 174m) the previous year.

However, mobile gaming helped buck the overall trend for the world's largest videogame publisher. Sales of mobile games were USD 36 million (EUR 26m) for the first quarter of 2007, a 140 per cent increase over the USD 15 million (EUR 11m) the previous year. For the full financial year 2006, mobile game sales reached USD 140 million (EUR 103m).

EA mobile plans to release between 30 and 35 games on handsets in 2007, with another 4 on iPod. It predicts its mobile revenue will surpass USD 175 million (EUR 129m).
