iPod Mobile Games Hacked

Mobile Games Blog has reported:

For all those that are waiting to explore development of iPod games but don’t get a license, there is a chance as some guys managed to open up the black box.

At this forum, hackers describe how to install an old firmware version in order to play downloaded mobile iPhone games. Of course, we do not promote playing games illegally, but to developers that want to explore Apple's system for their own creativity, this might be a nice entry.

7 Million Download Games Each Month In US

The NPD Group has issued a report stating that more than 29 million US users play mobile games and more than 7 million download games to their handsets each month. Last year 29 percent of games were downloaded by consumers aged 25 to 34, 27 percent by those aged 18 to 24, and 15 percent by teens between the ages of 13 and 17. Although teens are the most likely to download games there aren’t as many of them as in the adult groups. In terms of playing games about half of mobile gamers in the 25-34 age bracket play games at least once a day, while the figure for teens was 41 percent. The results are based on an ongoing monthly service of about 75,000 US people. (release)

Yet Another Porting Tool

Similar to Enough Software, Mobile Distillery, Tira Wireless, Javaground, Neomades is now proving a framework for abstracting device and Java implementation differences, so that applications can be easily ported between phones.

I am not sure how useful are these kind of tool to the big and medium players in the marketing today. Players like Gameloft and Glu have develop its own porting tools and prefer to to this in-house to maintain the control and quality of the code and the product.

Most of medium and small companies have already developed its own tools in-house and probably will not spent money buying services and tools like that. New companies in this market... well, are there any company and VC crazy enough to enter in this market now? I would not...

EJL Wireless Research Announces Latin American Mobile Games Market Hits USD $195 million in 2011

BREW market still expected to grow 47% by 2008 before declining.

Redwood City, CA, March 1, 2007: “The Latin America downloadable mobile game market hit USD $65 million in gross revenues in 2006 and is estimated to reach USD $195 million by 2011, according to the just released report from EJL Wireless Research titled ‘Latin America Mobile Games Market Analysis and Forecast, 2006-2011,’” says founder and President, Earl Lum.

The three largest countries in both gross revenues and total game downloads for 2006 were Brazil, Argentina, & Mexico. The report analyzes the mobile games market for 11 countries and 38 mobile operators within Latin America and addresses handset technology, mobile game decks and mobile game publishers/developers.

“Despite the transition from CDMA to GSM technology across many operators in the region, BREW remains healthy and strong edging out J2ME in both games downloads and gross revenues in 2006 and we expect the migration to occur slowly across the operator decks. The largest challenge in the region remains centered on VIVO in Brazil and its migration to GSM and J2ME content. We believe that this transition will not happen immediately,” says Lum.

The report is currently available for purchase and information can be downloaded at www.ejlwireless.com. EJL Wireless Research will be attending both the upcoming Game Developers Conference 2007 in San Francisco, CA and CTIA 2007 in Orlando, FL.

Nokia joystick patented

Nokia Joystick.jpgCould the next Nokia phone you buy be joystick enabled?

Inventors John Patrick Wong and Jeff Philip Crampton of Vancouver have just patented a Nokia design that would come with a trackball and a detachable stylus; allowing the stylus when plugged to become a fully functional video gaming joystick. Coupled with orientation sensors that can sense velocity and change of direction that Nokia has also recently patented, there’s no doubt that they can get this technology to work, but my question is how user friendly is it?

If you look closely at the design, the length of the joystick is longer than the length of the LCD screen, meaning that when trying to play, all you’re going to see is your fingers on the joystick blocking the screen.
